PROVENANCE
Sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 8 April 2011, lot 3124
The form of the present ewer is based on the design of those in the
early Ming, Yongle period, and is comparable to two examples: the
first is a larger white glazed ewer incised with dragons (12.5 cm. high),
and another is decorated in underglaze red with dragons; both of
which were excavated in 1983 from the early Yongle stratum at the
imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, illustrated in Imperial Hongwu and Yongle
Porcelain excavated at Jingdezhen, Chang Foundation, Taipei, 1996,
nos. 106 and 108 respectively.
A blue and white example includes a Xuande-marked ewer and cover
also of pear shape and similarly decorated with peonies, in the Beijing
Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in Blue and White Porcelain
with Underglazed Red (I), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the
Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2000, pl. 117.
