A MOULDED FAMILLE ROSE ‘ABSTINENCE’
PLAQUE
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
Of compressed ovoid form, the plaque is inscribed on one
side with an oval cartouche enclosing the characters zhaijie
‘abstinence’, all within a raised gilt border and an outer field
moulded with two pairs of confronting dragons variously grasping
or chasing a pearl, reserved on a yellow ground. The reverse is
similarly decorated with the inscription inscribed in Manchu.

A RARE MOTHER-OF-PEARL ‘ABSTINENCE’
PLAQUE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
The plaque is carved on each side with two stylised confronting
dragons. Their bodies are formed by an archaistic scroll that frame
a rectangular cartouche bordered by further scrolls at the centre
with two characters reading zhai jie, ‘abstinence’. The reverse is
similarly inscribed in Manchu script.
