    A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER HEXAFOIL BOX
    AND COVER

    QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

    The top of the cover is deeply carved within a hexafoil panel to
    depict a rocky landscape scene in which a seated scholar playing
    qin under a pine tree, while two attendants holding a book and
    a scroll walking across a bridge. Each of the six rounded sides is
    decorated with flowers growing on branches within a cartouche, the
    conforming box with six cartouches enclosing various auspicious
    animals in landscape. The interior of the cover is lacquered black
    and incised and gilt with the characters, Fuqin baohe (Playing qin
    treasure box), and the base of the box with an incised and gilt six-
    character Qianlong mark.
