A WOOD NETSUKE OF A DUTCHMAN
Edo Period
Typically depicted with shoulder-length,
curling hair and exaggerated features, clad in
a coat of finely detailed texture with a pleated
collar, carrying a boy on his back and a
trumpet in his right hand.

In the Edo period Dutch merchants were the
only Europeans admitted to Japan, where
they were confined to the island of Deshima.
Netsuke representing foreigners were popular
in this period, and a number of examples in
ivory are in museum collections, including
the Metropolitan Museum of New York
(no. 10.211.1506) and the British Museum
(F.558). A similar example to the present lot
is illustrated by F. Meinertzhagen, The Art of
the Nestuke Carver, London, 1975, plate 17,
no. 5.

NETSUKE
19th century, Meiji Period
Variously depicting: an elderly woman seated
upon a log and resting on a staff, signed
Chikusai; two terrapins crawling around a
hollowed log; Shoki and oni, with horn inset
eyes and ivory horns; a skeleton and skull
group; a cockerel; Kiyohime on the Dojoji bell;
and an oni crouching beneath a broad straw
hat as beans are thrown to exorcise him at
the Setsubun ceremony.
