The deep rounded sides rising up from a tall foot, the exterior finely
enamelled with the Eighteen Luohans, all on a rich blue ground, the
interior with a central floral composition and European painted flower
sprays. 39.5cm (15 1/2in) diam.

A famille rose armorial dish
Qianlong
Enamelled boldly in the central well with a coat of arms below a red
griffin and serpent crest, all within a gilt foliage band, a further griffin
crest on the rim, encircled by a delicate fleur-de-lys gilt border.

The motto reads: Dum tempus operemui bonum (sic), which may be
translated as ‘While there is time, let us do good’. On the present lot
the word ‘operemui’ is incorrectly copied by the Chinese painter: the
correct word is ‘operemur’. Furthermore the more usual motto includes
the verb ‘habemus’, perhaps here omitted in favour of symmetry and
space. The arms for the Irish market are those of either Odrone or
Teague impaling Gilman, Mann or Boot: see D.S.Howard, Chinese
Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p.290.
