A blue and white bowl
Kangxi six-character mark and of the period
Delicately and deeply potted with a gently flaring rim, painted in vibrant
tones of cobalt-blue with blooming lotus flowers borne on meandering
leafy foliage, all above a band of upright petal lappets, the interior
similarly decorated, wood stand.

A blue and white ‘long elizas’ baluster jar
Chenghua six-character mark, Kangxi
Painted vividly around the exterior with four ladies engaged in various
leisurely activities such as playing the lute, petting rabbits, and
appreciating flowers, standing beside wutong trees and arrangements
of peony and chrysanthemum, all beneath a band of phoenixes.

Vases such as the present lot, painted with ladies who are very tall in
proportion to the size of the piece (known affectionately in the West
as ‘Long Elizas’) are thought to have been made early in the Kangxi
period, due to their lively, uninhibited style.
