A blue and white deep bowl
Early Kangxi
Finely potted with wide rim, painted with a band of
stylised foliage, the central medallion depicting a
lady standing before an openwork rock in a fenced
garden deep in reverie, her hand exposing her wrist
while gazing up at the poem, the cavetto painted
with sprays of lotus, chrysanthemum and peony.

The mark within double circle is 玉堂佳器 yu tang jia
qi which translates as ‘Fine vessel for the Jade Hall’.
Inside the bowl is incribed this couplet:
想思恨轉深,’Reminiscing, her regrets deepen’;
慢把瑤琴弄。’languidly she plucks the jasper zither’
The thoughtful dreamy pose of the lady is related
to a dish, also dated early Kangxi, illustrated by
M.Butler, M.Medley and S.Little, Seventeenth
Century Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Family
Collection, Hong Kong, 1990, no.113, which depicts
a lady seated at a table, also by a fence.

Kangxi six-character mark and of the period
Thinly potted, the rounded sides rising to an everted
rim, the central medallion painted with three lotus
flower heads amongst scrolling foliage and leaves,
a floral border at the rim, the reverse painted with a
similar design.
