P. 161

From its ruyi-head shape to the decorative
motifs, the present two-tiered box abounds with
auspicious symbolism: the five bats represent
the Five Blessings (wu fu) of wealth, longevity,
health, love of virtue and a peaceful death. The
wishes of longevity and good fortune are also
reinforced by the presences of the peaches of
Immortality and by the well-wishing ruyi-head,
which is a pun for the phrase wan shi ru yi (萬事
如意), ‘May everything go as you wish’. Tiered
lacquer boxes with similar stands are illustrated
in Collections of the Palace Museum: Carved
           Lacquer Ware, Beijing, 1995, pp.264-265,
no.181; and in Masterpieces of Chinese Carved
Lacquer Ware in the National Palace Museum,
           Taipei, 1971, no.38.
