A PALE GREEN JADE CARVING OF A ‘HEAVENLY HORSE’
CARRYING BOOKS, LONGMA
18th century
Deftly carved in recumbent position above swirling waves, carrying
a bundle of books tied with a flowing ribbon on its back, the body
flanked by waves issuing from the sides, the head finely detailed with a
neatly combed mane and turned towards the back, the stone of pale
white-greyish tone with milky-white inclusions.
9.2cm (3 5/8in) long.

Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl.193,
which was later sold at Christie’s New York, 24 March 2011, lot 1507.
A related jade carving of a mythical horse carrying books on its back
while crossing the sea, mid Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection,

A FINE WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ‘GOOSE AND YOUNG’
PAPERWEIGHT
18th century
The pebble smoothly carved as a goose with finely-incised feathers,
its long elegant neck turned back to feed its young beside it, the
underside carved with swirling wave, the stone of pale white tone with
russet inclusions. 8.5cm (3 3/8in) long.

A WHITE JADE ‘BUDDHIST LION AND CUB’ BELT BUCKLE
18th century
Carved as a lioness and cub, the lioness with curly mane and a
bushy tail swept toward the front, crouching with a ribbon in its teeth
suspending a diaper-patterned brocade ball between the forelegs, the
cub joyfully clambering up the back, the lustrous stone of white tone
with small icy inclusions. 8.4cm (3 3/8in) wide.
