十八世紀 白玉麒麟把件
The design sends a hidden message, by combining images of bats (fu
蝠) which pun on ‘blessings’, and coins (qian 钱) which pun on ‘before’
to create the rebus ‘blessings before your eyes, ‘fuzai yanqian’ 福在眼
前. Traditional Chinese coins have a square central opening called an
‘eye’ (yan 眼).
See a related white jade carving of a mythical beast, 16th/17th century,
illustrated by R.Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and
Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, no.63.
