The Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming (1472-1529) was
unique among scholars and literati in also being a rebellion-quelling
general who not only dealt with abstract ideas, but also practical
issues as well. He is well known for advocating the idea of ‘knowledge
and action together as one’, as is carved on the present wristrest.
