of circular section, the cover skilfully carved with a scene
depicting an elderly scholar seated on a diapered ground and
gazing at a waterfall between a large pine tree and jagged cliffs,
all within a wavy border repeated at the rim and countersunk
base of the box, the box further encircled by a continuous
diaper-ground frieze enclosing pine blossoms, jagged rockwork
and waterfalls, the interior lacquered black

MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY

of circular section, the cover skilfully carved with two
conversing immortals, possibly Zhongli Quan and Lü Dongbin,
framed by lush vegetation and jagged rockwork, the box with
branches bearing flowering prunus blooms and large leaves,
encircled by ruyi cloud scrolls, all against a floral diapered
ground, the interior lacquered black
