A RARE AND EXQUISITELY CARVED AND
PAINTED SOAPSTONE BOX AND COVER
17TH CENTURY
of quatrefoil section, the top of the cover deftly carved in relief
with a mountainous landscape depicting a small bridge in the
foreground, with leafy shrubs behind cragged peaks of various
heights and pine growing from overhanging rocks, all reserved
on a finely incised ground of cresting waves in gilt, the sides
similarly decorated with a band of scrolling foliage and waves,
the sides of the box skilfully worked in relief with a wide key-
fret band reserved against a wave ground, all divided by a
band of waves above and a classic scroll below, the interior of
the box intricately incised and gilt-decorated with a ferocious
dragon, its menacing face framed by a flowy mane and the
sinuous body terminating in a bifurcated tail, the stone of an
attractive variegated tone of predominantly liver-red and beige
tone suffused with faint violet inclusions, the details further
accentuated by traces of paint

the substantial stone of oblong cylindrical form, the top with a
sloping channel worked in low relief with a pavilion emerging
from vapourous clouds and standing before mountains and
cresting waves, above a concave grinding surface and a pair
of dragons contesting a ‘flaming pearl’, the sides similarly
decorated with mythical beasts and sea creatures leaping out
of a tumultuous sea of foaming waves, the base with further
waves and clouds interrupted by eleven tubular extensions
