A RARE CORAL ‘SANDUO’ RUYI SCEPTRE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

the ruyi head carved with two bats depicted hovering over
globular peaches borne on gnarled stems, the arched
shaft with the other two ‘abundances’, finger citron and
pomegranates, as well as curling leaves, the end with a small
aperture skilfully incorporated in the design to thread a tassel
41.8 cm, 16⅜ in.

PROVENANCE
A French private collection.

Coral ruyi sceptres of this large size are rare and only a small
number of related examples has been published: one, but
carved on the ruyi-head with lingzhi, in the Palace Museum,
Beijing, was included in the Museum’s exhibition Auspicious
Ju-I Sceptres of China, Taipei, 1995, cat. no. 45, together with
one similarly fashioned with peaches, cat. no. 46; another in
the Palace Museum, Beijing, was included in the exhibition The
Three Emperors 1662-1795, Royal Academy of Arts, London,
cat. no. 281; and a third is published in Gems of Beijing Cultural
Relics Series. Works of Decorative Arts I, Beijing, 2004, pl. 252.

如此珊瑚如意尺寸之大者甚為罕有,見諸出版之類例亦甚
少。北京故宮藏一類例,如意頭雕飾靈芝,展於台北故宮
博物院《吉祥如意文物特展圖錄》,台北,1995年,編
號45;同展亦見一雕壽桃例,編號46。另見一例,亦藏
北京故宮博物院,展於《盛世華章》,皇家藝術學院,倫
敦,2005年,編號281。還有一例,刊於《北京文物精粹
大系.工藝品卷(上)》,北京,2004年,圖版252。

the ruyi-shaped terminal carved in low relief with the Three
Star Gods standing in a landscape with overhanging pine trees,
the curved shaft with a lobed panel enclosing the Eight Daoist
Immortals amidst a landscape with a fruiting peach tree, above
a shaped panel of a shou character roundel framed by two
bats, the reverse similarly decorated with alternating shou
roundels and five bats, the nearly flawless crystal of a clear
transparent tone, Japanese wood box inscribed by Chikuka
Sanjin in 1918
