AN EMBELLISHED AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE
1860-1930, with 20th century embellishment by the Tsuda family,
Kyoto, Japan
The flattened rectangular body with canted shoulders rising to a
tubular neck with slightly concave lip, supported on a low oval foot
ring, each main side decorated with colored stones and highlighted
with gilt-lacquer and pigments, one side depicting a seated scholar
instructing a child while an attendant looks on, the other side with a
lady preparing refreshments at a table as a child carries a laden tray.

AN AGATE ‘HORSE’ SNUFF BOTTLE
1800-1860
Well-hollowed, of flattened, rounded square form, the tubular neck with
a slightly concave lip, supported on a broad oval foot ring, the mottled
amber layer on one face carved and incised to form a saddled horse
tethered to a post.
