AN ARCHAISTIC SPINACH-GREEN JADE CONJOINED
DOUBLE-VASE AND COVER
Qianlong mark
Late 19th/20th century
Rendered as two baluster vases conjoined at the sides, the exterior
decorated with a continuous band of taotie masks and archaistic
images in relief against a key-fret patterned ground, the mouth and
foot rims incised with further key-fret patterns, the associated cover
with raised leaf design and surmounted by two globular finials, the
base incised with a four-character mark, the matrix a deep green hue
suffused with cloudy inclusions and dark striations.

It is quite rare to find an example of a double-vase worked in jade.
However, similar examples have been executed in porcelain. For
instance, a Qianlong marked clair-de-lune glazed double vase of
similar proportion is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of
Art, acquired in 1879, is illustrated on the museum's website (acc.no.
79.2.952).
