A NEGORO LACQUER CUP STAND, TENMOKU DAI
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century
Surmounted by a hollow opening serving as the hozugi or cup holder
encircled by a second everted rim all raised upon a conical foot,
most of the exterior surfaces covered in red but displaying the typical
isolated patches of black lacquer underneath.

Edo period, 17th/18th century
The everted rim encircling a flat well raised atop a conical foot, all
exterior surfaces covered in the typical red lacquer, the black lacquer
underside centered by a three character mark possibly reading
Gyo Juho.

Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century
The red top surface of simple flat circular shape surrounded by the
black rim, the undersides raised upon three feet and tinged a mottled
reddish and black hue.

Meiji era (1868-1912)
The first covered in detailed tableaux of cranes, flowers and pastoral
landscapes, the gilt interiors incised with additional sparrows and
butterflies, the underside centered by a makers’ mark reading Nihon
koku Kyoto ju Komai sei between the two kanji signature perhaps read
Shosho; the second larger box decorated to the surface to depict
the Imperial palace or similar wall and moat compound, the sides
surrounded by Tokugawa and Imperial Mon, the underside centered by
makers’ mark reading Dai Nihon Samurai Shokai.
