A well-known collector of fans, she was an
early member of the Fan Circle International
which was founded in 1975. Whilst she
collected a variety of fans, those of the Orient,
particularly China, remained an absorbing
interest: these fans illustrate that interest.

AN IVORY BRISÉ FAN
Early 18th century
Painted and gilt with a central medallion
of a peacock in a flowering garden, on a
reticulated star motif ground reserved with
exotic birds amongst flowering peony stems,
the guard sticks with openwork panels and
tortoiseshell appliqué to the head, fitted
brocade box.

AN UNUSUAL IVORY BRISÉ FAN
Circa 1700
Each side painted in polychrome pigments
and gilt, the main register with a central
shaped panel of European gentlemen
watching a cockerel fight in a garden,
flanked by leaf shaped panels of butterflies
amongst fruit and flowers, above narrower
bands of similar floral cartouches, butterflies
and flowering stems, the upper border with
reticulated panels of swastika motifs, the
guard stick head with tortoiseshell appliqué,
fitted box.
