A CARVED AMBER SNUFF BOTTLE
1750-1850
The transparent walls of the honey-colored bottle are carved with two Buddhist lions
on one side, and a recumbent elephant supporting a vase containing lotus blossoms
on its back on the reverse.

The combination of a vase (ping) and an elephant (xiang) provides a homonym
for the rebus taiping youxiang (‘May there be a peaceful reign’).
