of lobed circular section, the top with a raised edge,
carved with a central owerhead amid foliate scrollwork
and four bats, the recessed waist with wanzi pattern and
keyfret borders over a shaped apron and ve ruyi-form
cabriole legs with fruiting peach boughs and further bats,
all raised on a conforming ring base and ve bracket feet

the square top with notched corners resting on a pierced
waist, the lobed apron continuing into slender cabriole
legs atop a conforming base, the top inlaid with a scene
depicting a scholarly gathering at riverside pavilions
under a full moon, willow, and wutong trees, the sides and
legs with owers, birds, scholar’s instruments, and diaper
pattern, the base with a scene of courting mandarin
ducks among reeds

DATED WANLI RENCHEN YEAR,
CORRESPONDING TO 1592
of rectangular outline with cusped corners, the sides
carved with recessed panels decorated with owers
borne on a leafy stem, reserved against a ground of peony
blossoms, the lip led down, supported on a low keyfret
encircled foot, the base incised with the dated mark and
three characters reading Fufan yong (for use by Fufan)
Length 10⅛ in., 25.7 cm
