MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
woven as brocaded satin with supplementary weft threads in
contrasting colors producing an image of three vivacious four-
clawed dragons leaping for ‘ aming pearls’ above crashing
waves, composed of ve separate pieces of silk, mounted on
board and framed

A BLUE SILK BROCADE DRAGON ROBE
(JIFU)
QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
woven with gilt-wrapped threads over a deep blue eld, with
nine ve-claw dragons pursuing aming pearls amongst
auspicious emblems, within borders with the terrestrial
diagram and lishui stripe at the sleeves and hem, the gold-
striped sleeve extensions ending in black ground horse-hoof
cu s, with similarly patterned collar band
