the deep rounded body supported on three straight columnar
legs, the exterior cast with a single frieze of alternating whorls
and squares with crescents against leiwen, three pictograms
cast into the interior wall, the silvery green patina with some
encrustation

the deep, ovoid body raised on three gently sloping feet
of tapered triangular section, the mouth rim everted and
spreading to a point on one side, the reverse a curved spout
between two upright nials, the body with a band of two
stylized taotie separated by a vertical ribbed ange, one with
a beast mask handle arched over the center, the base with
impressed Chen Mingyuan zhi seal

AN ARCHAISTIC BRONZE VASE
17TH / 18TH CENTURY
of baluster form rising to a wide mouth with lipped rim, cast
with four registers of archaistic decoration, the neck and
body cast with taotie masks on a leiwen ground, the shoulder
and base with narrower band of striding kuilong, the body set
with opposing mythical beast curled handles, all supported
on a cylindrical stepped foot, the base cast with a ji gu de zhi,
together with a small garlic-headed bottle vase with archaistic
decoration, Yuan dynasty (2)

PROVENANCE
Collection of Anson Burlingame Johnson (1855-1934), Los
Angeles, California, acquired when serving as United States
Consul to Xiamen around 1900, and thence by descent.
