The so-called handling technology refers to the method and procedure by which the handling efficiency and cost of the terminal,
the time of vessel and container truck staying in port, are comprehensively weighed and reasonable equipment and parameters are
selected to make the capacity of each step match with each other to further realize the rationality of handling technology system
in terms of technology and economy on the premise that the terminal should meet the basic operation requirements of loading,
unloading, entering, lifting, moving and turning of containers. “Handling technology and management science are the leading
factors of port engineering”. This assertion was recognized by the industry as early as in the 1960s. Handling technology is not only
the key to lead the development of automated terminal, but also the decision-making basis in the stage of investment opportunity
investigation and engineering feasibility study.
Since the end of 1980s, the development of global automated terminals has experienced a history of more than 30 years. From
the British Port of Thames, which was the first port where end handling and two RMGs are used for relay operation, to the Dutch
ECT terminal, which has only one RMG in the yard and adopts AGV for horizontal transportation for the first time, and to the CTA
Terminal in Hamburg, Germany, which has RMGs for crossing operation, automated terminals have witnessed continuous iteration,
and the handling process of the fully automated terminals has basically formed the mode of "end handling and relay operation by
RMG", which has been used for more than 20 years.
