Layer Blend Modes: Adding Texture to your Background
If you shot your subject on a neutral background of some kind (light gray, beige, tan, etc.), instead of pulling the subject off the background and pasting
them onto a different one, you can usually use this super-quick trick, which does the opposite—you put a new background on top of your subject, and then
use a layer blend mode to bring that texture onto your current background. It’s like a composite, only easier.
Step One:
Bring the image that you want to add a background texture on top of over to Photoshop by selecting it in Lightroom and then pressing Command-E (PC:
Ctrl-E). This technique works best if your subject is on some sort of neutral background (gray, tan, beige, etc.). Shoot your subject on that type of
background (like this gray seamless paper), and this technique works like a charm.
