This article briefly presents the development of IT, examines the present status of

librarians/information professionals and what may be the reasons for them not making an impact
on the society. Suggestions given to improve the situation and to face the challenges of IT

include improved quality of professional education and training, attitudinal change, change in
organisation, work environment and the adaptation to the existing physical facilities.
