sets—providing obvious advantages over a library-only data structure like
METS. Additionally, the schema’s flexibility, semantic web roots, and agile
grassroots community make it a good fit for digital library development.
As of this writing, most digital repository systems (CONTENTdm, DSpace,
BePress, the Samvera project) are actively working to implement the IIIF
Presentation protocol in order to enable digital humanities research and to
create interoperability between digital repositories. If this support comes
to fruition, it is likely that IIIF will replace METS as the dominant format
for defining structure within a digital repository.
