ence. Additionally, administrative and preservation metadata (discussed in
chapter 4) add to this already expanding metadata universe. Below, we’ve
tried to highlight some of the most important domain-specific metadata
formats.
PBCore (Public Broadcasting Metadata Dictionary)

The PBCore is a metadata schema that is designed to richly describe
sound and moving images. Its primary usage community is museums
and cultural heritage organizations that manage film and media archives.
VRA Core (Visual Resources Association
Metadata Dictionary)

The VRA Core was developed by the Visual Resources Association,
in cooperation with the Library of Congress, to develop a metadata
schema for richly describing images and works of art.
EAD (Encoded Archival Description)

The EAD schema was developed by the archives community to de-
scribe collection finding aids in an electronic environment.
TEi (Text Encoding initiative)

The TEI schema is an international metadata format that was created
to support the markup of manuscripts and other document materials.
Darwin Core

Darwin Core is a format that was developed specifically for the de-
scription and categorization of biological diversity information.
CSDGM (Content Standard for Digital
Geospatial Metadata)
