had informed Kerry about his administration’s
efforts to curb the practice of burning off gas
during crude oil production operations rather
than separating it and setting it aside for later
use.
“We discussed this topic with Mr. Kerry, and
we’re already working on two programmes to
reduce the flaring of gas,” he said.
The president did not describe either of the
programmes, but he did emphasise that Mex-
ico had a strong incentive to capture the gas
rather than burn it off. “It’s something that we’re
already dealing with because it’s the most irra-
tional thing that can happen – to be buying gas
and having to burn it here, with the contamina-
tion that it implies,” he remarked.
Lopez Obrador was speaking in response
to questions about the release of a report by
the European Space Agency (ESA) earlier this
month on the discovery that Mexico’s national
oil company (NOC) Pemex had experienced
a methane leak at an offshore platform last
December. In the report, ESA researchers said
they had discovered the leak after viewing satel-
lite imagery that pointed to the release of more
than 4,000 tonnes of methane, equivalent to 3% The ESA detected a methane leak at the Ku-Maloob-Zaap cluster (Image: Pemex)
