Dermal Puncture






       Dermal puncture is the preferred

       blood collection technique for

       infants and small children.







       • It is difficult to locate a vein that is large enough to

           withstand the vacuum created by the evacuated collection


           tubes.



       • Children do not enjoy venipuncture and usually will not


           remain still for the length of time venipuncture requires.



       • Dermal puncture is much easier to perform.



       • Dermal puncture is less traumatic for the child.
