Dermal Puncture
Dermal puncture is the preferred
blood collection technique for
infants and small children.
• It is difficult to locate a vein that is large enough to
withstand the vacuum created by the evacuated collection
tubes.
• Children do not enjoy venipuncture and usually will not
remain still for the length of time venipuncture requires.
• Dermal puncture is much easier to perform.
• Dermal puncture is less traumatic for the child.
