I have been instructed by my Mother’s Chancellor that I am to be given a ship for my
voyage on the sole condition that I fill my holds with seeds and fauna from her botanical
gardens at Kew to distribute across the empire.
I arrived amid much drama and the garden was teeming with police. It would appear
that the Gardens seed archive has been plundered. I am left to wait for what seemed
an aeon and pass the time admiring the stunning architecture of the palm house designed
by Decimus Burton.
In the stifling air from the heat of the palms, I am soon parched by thirst and take it
upon myself to concoct a draft to quench it. Grabbing some roses and what I believe
are small cucumbers, I decide to make my Queen Victoria Punch.
It was at this point the curator, my old friend Donald Smythe, came in with a look of
thunder on his face! To add insult to injury, I have apparently just butchered his
latest experiment; the attempt to cross pollinate cucumbers with melons and create the
first Cucamelon. Calming Smythe with a drink he proceeds to tell me of the previous
evening’s events, that a man had broken into the gardens and stolen most of the cache of
seeds I was to take on my voyage.
I leave with what is left of the seeds for Mother’s colonies - my first port of call is
the Ascension Islands to meet up with the curator of the Gardens, Joseph Dalton Hooker.
