I arrive in a very different Japan to my last visit - the country is gripped by
modernisation and western fashion. Wanting to capture some of the nostalgia from my
previous visit, I head to the old capital, Kyoto.
I venture out to seek pleasures on the back streets and alleyways of Gion only to come
across one of the many Ochaya (tea houses) I was introduced to by my old departed
friend, Saigo Takamori. The owner of the house, recognising me, ushered me in. Recalling
the owner’s predilection for hard liquor from previous visits, I gift him a bottle of my
finest rum in thanks.
I am led through to the secret dining area hosted by the wonderful Geiko and Maiko, both
Geishas in training.
After an entrancing evening of dancing, tea ceremony and the odd spot of rum, I am sent
on my way with a small gift of delightful pastries. Asking the name of this unusual
sweet treat, I am told ‘Wagashi’.
I go back to my ship and create a drink to evoke memories of this exotic evening.
