Daedalus was always proud of his ability to hold his breath so, on hearing rumours of
south sea pearls the size of grapes coming from the seas of Japan, he set off
immediately to offer his services as a deep sea pearl diver. Finding out that the source
of these stories was a young Kichi Mikimoto, the doctor sought an immediate meeting.
Mikimoto showed a handful of pearls of perfect spherical shape, the size of which drew
the doctor’s breath away. When the doctor asked if Mikimoto wanted his services as a
diver, he was promptly laughed at by the young Japanese man.

The doctor, refusing to give up, pestered the pearl entrepreneur until he relented and told
the doctor the secret of his success in manufacturing the first cultured pearls.
Never one to miss an opportunity, the doctor asked if he could invest in the young man
and help him purchase his first pearl oyster farm in the Sinmei Inlet.
Daedalus never got to accomplish his dream of pearl diving but nevertheless made a
          fortune from his small investment.
