o The appearance of Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog).
"Until the Gog and Magog (people) are let through (their barrier), and they swiftly swarm from
every hill. Then will the true promise draw nigh (of fulfilment). Then behold! the eyes of the
Unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror: 'Ah! Woe to us! we were indeed heedless of this; nay, we
truly did wrong!' - Al-Anbiya (The Prophets) 21:97
o The appearance of the Dabbat al-Ard (Beast of the Earth).
"And when the Word is fulfilled against them (the unjust), we shall produce from the earth a
beast to (face) them. He will speak to them, for that mankind did not believe with assurance in
Our Signs." - Al-Naml (The Ant) 27:82
o Three huge earthquakes.
o Smoke in the sky.
"Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly
visible, enveloping the people. This will be a Penalty Grievous." - Ad-Dukhan (Smoke) 44:11
o The rise of the Mahdi (Guided One) to restore Islam.
The Mahdi is a prophesied redeemer who will rule for 7 years (or 9 or 19 years, according to
various sources) before the Day of Judgement.87 Shi'a Muslims believe that the Mahdi (closely
related as the Twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi) was born but disappeared, and will one day
return to fill the world with justice.
The Mahdi will rid the world of wrongdoing, injustice, and tyranny.
Muhammad claimed that the Mahdi would come from the Arabs and have the name of
Muhammad and be from Muhammad's family lineage.88
o The return of Isa (Jesus) from heaven to assist the Mahdi in restoring Islam.89
• The Qur'an provides a framework for understanding the Day of Judgement.
o Only Allah knows the timing of the Day of Judgement.
"Men ask thee concerning the Hour. Say, 'The knowledge thereof is with Allah (alone)', and what
will make thee understand? Perchance the Hour is nigh!" - Al-Ahzab (The Clans) 33:63
o Muhammad cannot hasten the Day of Judgement.
"For me, I (work) on a clear sign from my Lord, but ye reject Him. What ye would see hastened,
is not in my power. The command rests with none but Allah: He declares the truth, and He is the
best of judges." - Al- Anaam (Cattle) 6:57
o Those who have died will feel like only a short time has passed.
"One day He will gather them together. (It will be) as if they had tarried but an hour of a day.
They will recognise each other. Assuredly those will be lost who denied the meeting with Allah
and refused to receive true guidance." - Yunus (Jonah) 10:45
"It (the Day of Judgement) will be on a Day when He will call you, and ye will answer (His call)
with (words of) His praise, and ye will think that ye tarried but a little while!" - Al-Isra' (The Night
Journey) 17:52
o All creation will perish.
"And call not, besides Allah, on another god. There is no god but He. Everything (that exists) will
perish except His own Face. To Him belongs the Command, and to Him will ye (all) be brought
back." - Al-Qasas (The Story) 28:88
o God will resurrect all mankind.
"They say: 'What! when we are reduced to bones and dust, should we really be raised up (to be) a
new creation?' Say: '(Nay!) be ye stones or iron, or created matter which, in your minds, is hardest
(to be raised up), (yet shall ye be raised up)!' Then will they say: 'Who will cause us to return?' Say:
'He who created you first' Then will they wag their heads towards thee, and say, 'When will that be?'
Say, 'May be it will be quite soon!' - Al-Isra' (The Night Journey) 17:49-51
o A trumpet will be sounded twice.
