To make a fast release possible when tied to a buoy near a lee shore—or
        a pricey marina berth—try the slipped half hitch if you are tied to a rail or a
        ring and a slippery hitch if you are using lines fixed ashore and can belay to

        your own cleat.
           The slipped half hitch shown in the drawing should have the loop
        worked up to the top of the object around which the knot is taken (far
        right). It is then more likely to stay put than if left as in the middle draw¬
        ing. And as with any slip knot, it needs to be snugged up carefully.
