To tie up a ring or horizontal rail using flat webbing, try the latigo knot.
Tied as shown, it is constructed like the water knot, holds well and has rea¬
sonable resistance to jamming. Make sure you leave a foot-long tail.
LATIGO KNot
Shock cord is another tricky material to tie knots in. When I enrolled at
the Woollahra Sailing Club on Sydney Harbor as the greenest Australian
Moth sailor in the fleet, it was the club Cherub champion who took time
out to give some friendly advice on the club lawn. Pointing to his own
immaculate arrangements on Pacific Surfer, Neville Olliffe said he found a
plain reef knot the most satisfactory for joining rope to shock cord.
“I reckon the figure eight knot is the simplest and least slippery for tying
clips and such to shock cord . . . pass the cord through the eye of the clip
and do a figure eight instead of a half hitch around the standing part.”
His advice has since proved very sensible.
