Murder on the Dirigible
POMELLO: What the hell do you mean by that?
METCALF: Come on, you know what I mean.
POMELLO: Say, what is this: the third degree? If you think
somebody here wanted to bump off Wendell Fisk, why don’t you
look for those enemies you say he had? I had nothing to gain by
losing him. In fact, I am going to have a big fight on my hands
tomorrow at a board meeting without his support.
METCALF: Oh, yes, the directors of the West Coast Helium
Navigation Company. You hold a controlling interest, don’t you?
POMELLO: Well, about fifty-five percent.
METCALF: Who has the rest?
POMELLO: Oh, a couple of businessmen up north. You can find
their names in those papers you seized illegally, if you care to know.
METCALF: (looks through papers) All right. Now, tell me, Mrs.
Pomello: whatever relationship existed between you and the
deceased, you knew him better than anyone else on board this
airship: did he seem worried about anything lately?
POMELLO: Yeah, He thought he was going bald.
METCALF: Why do you have to get smart with me? I’m just trying
to find out who did him in. Don’t you want to help?
POMELLO: Not if you keep dragging us in the dirt.
METCALF: Sorry, sorry. You’re awfully touchy. What about money?
Did he have any problems there?
POMELLO: Fisk? Don’t make me laugh. He was always rolling in
dough. But he didn’t like to part with any of it, either. Anybody tried
to hit him up for a loan, he would turn them down. He always said he
came up the hard way, and it taught him to appreciate the value of a
dollar.
