Murder on the Dirigible
OGLETHORPE: What—what do you mean?
METCALF: Your father owns part of the West Coast Helium
Navigation Company. Do you deny knowing that?
OGLETHORPE: No. No, I don’t deny it. But my father has a lot of
investments. He had to branch out into other businesses during
Prohibition. Say, what is this? I paid for my seat, just like everyone
else.
METCALF: You knew about the poison and Fisk was on his way to
blow the whistle on something connected to this blimp company.
What was it, Oglethorpe?
OGLETHORPE: I don’t know what you’re talking about. I didn’t
even know Fisk existed until he fell out of his seat.
METCALF: Do you have any luggage in the cabin?
OGLETHORPE: No.
METCALF: All right: empty your pockets. Let’s see what you’ve got.
(Oglethorpe takes out wallet, etc.) No little bottles of curare stashed
away in that jacket? Raise your arms. (frisks Oglethorpe) Let’s go take
a look at your seat. (they go into passenger compartment; after
search, Metcalf sighs) I can’t nail you yet, college boy, but as of this
moment, you are suspect number one. (to others) Did any of you see
this guy hanging around Fisk before the lights went out? (negative
response from all)
OGLETHORPE: Stop trying to railroad me, Metcalf! Look, why
don’t you go about this logically? If Fisk sat on something that killed
him, then it had to be placed there when he was out of his seat.
PERKINSON: That’s right! You can figure out scientifically which
one of the passengers could have done it, by the process of
elimination.
POMELLO: I seem to remember you coming through here just after
Fisk went into the bathroom.
