P. 14
Entranced and focused on a spot,
The cat sees things that I do not;
I don’t find her realistic—
But the hunter is a mystic.
I roused him to amuse my guest,
But Tom soon put the drapes to test:
So Fido’s not the only guy
Who sleeping should be left to lie!
A puppet strung on rubber strings,
The cat is flung about on flings,
A victim of the sudden pull
Of moonlight monthly switched on full.
The cat’s domestic policy
Is “Nothing hides in here but me;
And as for what goes on outside,
What I don’t know can’t hurt my pride.”
To look as awkward as a man,
A cat must execute a plan
Flagrantly in violation
Of the law of gravitation.
No creature gives or takes offence
As often as the cat—and thence
Reappears without dejection
Just to give or take affection.
