The Big Idea – Act 3
are standing around up here: the chief has posted us to direct you
toward our destination.
HALFWIT 1: Oh? Which way is that?
RIVAL 1: Well, come over here (they go to stage left) You see the
river fork down there?
HALFWIT 2: Certainly. Plain as day.
RIVAL 1: Well, that’s where you must go next, and this is the
shortest path.
HALFWIT 3: But which fork of the river should we follow?
RIVAL 1: Oh, don’t worry about that: someone else is waiting down
there to give you further instructions.
HALFWIT 1: Thank you, thank you very much, indeed! (as
HALFWITS exit left) Isn’t it wonderful when you know where you’re
going!
RIVAL 2: Aw, that was too easy, boss. Anyone could have sent
those guys off in the wrong direction.
RIVAL 1: Possibly. But it’s done. All the followers of The Big Idea
have been scattered to the winds. And here comes the idea-man
himself. Quick: go stand over there out of sight, until I give you the
high-sign. (RIVAL 2 retreats to rear)
UTOPIAN: (enters right)
A dream resembles a tree that’s seen late at night
Its character obliterated by shadow;
But today I have mustered many bright torches
To help me illumine the structure in detail.
I regret my appeal had to be so simple—
But no more than the seed or sapling could I show
To minds so deficient in imagination;
Now they shall see the fruits borne by all the branches!
