husband. Let me be of assistance: I have several eligible young men
in mind, all of good family here in the district.”
“Perhaps after I have gained some experience of the world,” she
replied, sitting down in the room’s single guest chair. “Now it is time
for me make use of my education. It would be a shame to waste all
those years of study abroad.”
Fyodor shook his head violently.
“It is true that your late parents had a definite purpose in mind
when they sent you to the Sorbonne and the Ecole des Beaux Arts;
but it was to make you more desirable as a wife, a suitable partner for
a rich, cultured member of our aristocracy.”
