A little while later, Sniffy had finished eating the last of his popcorn.
It was almost dark and he was ready to go inside for the evening. He
stood up and stretched and took one last look out at the sky where
the sun had set. To his surprise his neighbor Spiffy was already busy
building up the wall in front of his house. By the next morning,
Sniffy realized, his view would again be blocked.
So Sniffy got busy raising his patio. Both elves were working in the
dark, frequently dropping pieces of wood on their toes and hitting
their thumbs with a hammer. Each time one of them stopped, he
could hear his neighbor banging and sawing across the clearing—so
he had to go back to work again.
