“All right,” said Sniffy.

“It’s okay with me,” said Spiffy. “What do we have to do?”

“It’s very simple. You, the elf with the wall, must wear earplugs just
before the sun sets; and you, the elf with the patio, must pop your
corn just before the sun sets and no other time.”

Sniffy and Spiffy smiled and shook hands. “I will go and find some
wax for earplugs,” said Spiffy. “But what must we do in return?”

“First you must take down the wall and return the patio to ground
level, and use all the materials to build a steeplechase for squirrels
down by the river.”

“That’s easy enough,” said Sniffy. What is the second thing?”

“Every evening when you make popcorn,” said the squirrel, hopping
off the rock and dashing toward the trees, “I want ten percent of it.”
