The competition was held one Saturday morning inside the
audience hall of the royal palace. Hundreds of people jammed into
the cavernous space, spectators and would-be suitors alike. Following
a long fanfare on fluegelhorns and serpents, the princess entered the
hall on the arm of her father. Many in the crowd, after rising from
their knees, remarked upon both the princess’s beauty and her
nervous shredding of a copy of the royal decree announcing the
contest.
