The spectators gasped as the multi-hued gemstones glittered and
flashed on all sides of the Great Hall. The upper and lower strands
were white pearls and clear diamonds, evidently indicating the
invisible wavelengths of light above and below the visible spectrum.
Between them, in order from top to bottom, were lengths of deep
violet amethyst and onyx, purple opals, blue sapphire and aquamarine
and lapis lazuli, green jade and emerald and garnet and tourmaline
and moss agate, yellow topaz and jasper, orange amber and coral, and
red ruby and carnelian. With great deliberateness the king put the
necklace over Princess Nollimay’s head and draped it on her gown.
