The king then continued: “Eligible males: this contest is only for
the very brave and very bright among you. Bright because you must
answer a question to my satisfaction. Brave because anyone venturing
a foolish guess will be banished forever from my kingdom. And the
question is this: what is the real significance of the Rainbow
Necklace?”
Buzzing and muttering, the crowd scratched its collective head. No
one had ever seen the Rainbow Necklace before, not even the oldest
among them; no documents could be recalled referring to the
ornament; and no legends or stories were on the tip of anyone’s
tongue. Several young men, weighing the risks against the benefits of
trying their luck, decided against it. Baublestein’s neighbors were not
known for their hospitality, particularly toward political exiles seeking
asylum.
