The next contestant wore thick glasses and a stained robe with
measuring devices protruding from its folds.
“Permit me to introduce myself, Your Majesties. I am your humble
servant, Pickering Locke, Master of Science in the Baublestein
Institute of Geology. First, I must congratulate Your Majesty on his
choice of gemstones. They appear to be flawless.”
He took off his glasses, put a jeweler’s loupe in one eye and peered
at the necklace. The princess squirmed under the scrutiny; she did
not think her own beauty was quite as flawless.
“Enough!” growled the king, who saw no need to increase his
daughter’s fretting. “Just answer the question.”
