The geologist gave way to a figure familiar to many in the pressing
throng. He made his way forward slowly, waving to people on all
sides. His cloak was bright red, and his hat of many feathers
proclaimed his rank as a member of the Royal Council. After an
elaborate bow, he turned so that he was addressing the onlookers as
much as the throne.
“I am, as all of you know, your loyal servant, Hipponymous Tosh,
Your Majesties. It is my great pleasure to come before you today to
seek the hand of Princess Nollimay. My years of experience in public
affairs make me uniquely qualified to hold the high office of prince
consort. If successful in my bid, I promise each and every one of you
here today a rebate on your tithe.”
A cheer erupted from the crowd, initiated by the councilor’s most
dedicated and highly-paid supporters. The king signaled impatiently
for silence, and order was quickly restored.
