acceptable knowledge—despite that knowledge depending for its
growth to some extent on that fringe. The failures were spectacular,
often enough. At least I could rationalize my role as a sort of air
cleaner, eliminating odd and embarrassing odors from the waiting
rooms of a perfume manufacturer. It was not much ego salve; but
once the money I’d made dwindled to a very small pile, it was all I
could muster.
