always troubled and the clouds of war were always threatening. It
was my inclination to understand the world beyond the perimeter of
Pelcovizna. I happened once to send in a letter to the Hebrew daily
about some small event in the village which was disgracing to its
leading Jewish citizens; as a result, the townspeople thought that I
was affiliated with the newspaper and was one of the intelligentsia.
My sporty appearance and snobbish airs were, in fact, just to disguise
my profession, but my stock went up with the matchmakers of the
town and, of course, they found girls for me.
