                                 Chronology


        Also  of  assistance  to  the  reader  is  the  following  chronology  of
        significant events in AR’s life.  Some of the dates are approximate;
        see the preceding introductory text for a discussion of AR’s date of
        birth.

        1881  (?) Born in Warsaw; family in Mathias Binshtock’s house.
        1885  Serious illness; almost dies.
        1886  Begins cheder .
        1887  Family moves to Praga.
        1890  Family moves to Rothstein compound in Pelcovizna.
        1895  Wisoka trip.
        1896  Makova trip.
        1898  Family moves to Ochota; collector job in Warsaw.
        1899  On bread route with father.
        1900  Family returns to Pelcovizna; takes job with smugglers.
        1901  Abortive matchmaking.
        1903  Flees Poland; arrives in New York.
        1904  Lives with Gutterman; works in sweatshops.
        1906  Moves into Cohen household.
        1908  Marries Fannie Cohen; moves to Los Angeles; peddles junk.
        1909  Opens cleaning and pressing shop; Hilda born.
        1911  Opens secondhand clothing shop.
        1913  Moves to 21st Street with Ben’s family.
        1917  Carmel born.
        1918  In quartermaster’s office in Chicago.
        1920  Opens garage.
        1923  Returns to peddling fruit.
        1925  Family moves to new house on Figueroa Street.
        1928  Buys farm with brothers.
        1935  Loses farm; remains with produce route.
        1948  Pneumonia; quits produce route, takes job in junkyard.
        1952  Fannie dies (February 4).
        1953  Works in furniture factory.
        1957  Takes maintenance job in miniature golf course.
        1960  Moves to Orange Street.
        1964  Dies (May 15)
